The purpose of the given work is to make a comparative assessment of the operation efficiency of vertical drains of different filter designs used to reduce the groundwater level in the areas prone to flooding. Historically, residential buildings were constructed on the banks of rivers which served as a vital artery for the population. In spring and during heavy raining the river flooded by melt or rainwater used to overflow out of the banks. Water flooded inshore areas and the buildings located on them and as a result of the groundwater level rising caused their flooding. Filling dams served as structures for flooding protection of surface water. As a rule, there was no protection against rising of groundwater levels. Under modern conditions in the settlements built on the banks of large rivers, such as the Yenisei, problems of flooding are most acute due to the fact that the river has a mountainous character. Studies to solve the problem were carried out under the laboratory conditions on a model simulating the work of vertical drainage. For comparison, there were taken tubes of the same diameter equipped with filters of the holes of different size and form. Drainage pipes were connected to the collector from which the forced water pumping by means of the pumping equipment was made. During the experiment there were measured volumes of the pumped water, values of levels lowering of the underground water in the center of the circuit and at its boundaries. According to the results of the operating drains studying there were built graphs allowing to compare and evaluate the drains usage efficiency of a different filter part design. At the end of the research and processing of the values there were made practical conclusions and conclusions of the most effective design of drains.
